Our mission is to connect formerly farmed hens with loving forever homes.

We rehabilitate and rehome Chickens as companions only, we do not guarantee any of the hens will lay. Please do not apply if you are only looking to keep hens for egg laying.

All hens adopted through us have been health checked, wormed, lice & mite treated, had their claws trimmed, received a calcium injection and any necessary vet work. Hens spend a minimum of 1 week in care being observed for illness or injuries and are given time and space to adjust to their new life outside of the farm.

How many hens are you applying to adopt?

Please note: If you do not have any hens we will adopt out a minimum of 3, If you already have hens we will adopt out in pairs

Do you currently care for, or have you previously cared for chickens? If so, please tell us a little about your experience. (It is fine if you have not cared for hens before, we all start somewhere and support is available).

Do you have a predator proof sleeping area for the hens? Please tell us about their enclosure and upload pictures below.

Please note: Foxes can dig under houses and go over fences, measures will need to be taken to prevent this. If you need any advice on fox-proofing your enclosures, please get in touch.

If you already care for chickens, do you have a seperate area to house the new rescues while they are slowly introduced to your existing flock if necessary?

Do you have any companion dogs or cats that pose a risk to the hens safety? How will you go about keeping them safe?

Do you have a good Avian vet for your hens should they become unwell? Please name your vet

Please Note: As Factory Farmed hens are selectively bred, they can be prone to health issues and require a specialist vet. Hens bred for egg laying commonly experience reproductive illness and disease. Chickens bred to be eaten are unnaturally large causing enormous stress to their internal organs and legs. Please think about if you are willing and financially able to provide verterinary care before applying.

Should your rescue hens show signs of ill health, will you attend the vet with them prompty?

Please Note: As prey animals, Chickens hide illness, injury and ailments until its simply not possible to do so. If your hen appears even a little unwell, its time for a vet trip.

Will your adopted hens be fed a variety of good quality grains, greens and seeds?

If any of the hens are laying eggs, are you willing to feed some of their eggs back to them in order to replenish lost nutrients and fats?

Please Note: Hens that have been selectively bred to lay eggs can lay 250-300+ eggs per year, comparatively, their wild cousins lay 10-15. Due to the enormous toll this takes on their body, it's important to feed the eggs back to the hens to replenish lost nutrients and fats.

Do you intend to keep your adopted hens if they stop laying eggs?

In the event you are no longer able to continue caring for your adopted hens, do you agree to surrender them back to Shear Existence Sanctuary?

Are you willing to pay an adoption fee of $20 per hen?

Please Note: Your adoption fee helps us cover some of the costs of worming, mite and lice treatment, calcium and vitamin injections, as well as Vet appointments, food, medicine and enables us to continue saving hens.
